Homemade Banana Chips for a Delicious and Nutritious Snack

Banana chips are a delicious and nutritious snack that you can easily make at home. They are perfect for munching on anytime and are a healthier alternative to store-bought snacks. Here’s how you can make homemade banana chips.

  • 4-5 raw bananas (green bananas or plantains)
  • Oil for deep frying (coconut oil or vegetable oil)
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of turmeric powder (optional, for color)
  • Black pepper or chaat masala for seasoning (optional)

  1. Prepare the Bananas:
    • Peel the raw bananas. To make peeling easier, cut off both ends and make a shallow slit along the length of the banana. Use your fingers to peel off the skin.
    • Slice the bananas thinly using a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife. Ensure the slices are even for uniform frying.
  2. Soak the Slices:
    • In a bowl, mix water with a pinch of turmeric powder and a little salt. Soak the banana slices in this mixture for about 10-15 minutes. This helps remove excess starch and gives a nice color to the chips.
  3. Dry the Slices:
    • Drain the banana slices and spread them out on a clean kitchen towel. Pat them dry to remove any excess moisture. This step is crucial to ensure crispiness.
  4. Heat the Oil:
    • Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. To check if the oil is hot enough, drop a small piece of banana slice into the oil. If it sizzles and rises to the surface immediately, the oil is ready.
  5. Fry the Banana Chips:
    • Carefully add a handful of banana slices to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan.
    • Fry the slices until they turn golden and crispy. Stir occasionally to ensure even frying.
    • Use a slotted spoon to remove the chips from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  6. Season the Chips:
    • While the chips are still warm, sprinkle salt to taste. You can also add black pepper or chaat masala for additional flavor.
  7. Cool and Store:
    • Allow the banana chips to cool completely before storing them in an airtight container. This helps retain their crispiness.

  • For a healthier version, you can bake the banana chips. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F), place the banana slices on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake for about 15-20 minutes or until crispy, flipping halfway through.
  • You can experiment with different seasonings like paprika, garlic powder, or cinnamon to create various flavors.

Enjoy your homemade banana chips as a delicious and nutritious snack!
